Hello John,
I found a solution to your problem which has become mine, too.
With the OSAX "Akua Sweets" it is as simple as it could be:
set myFile to choose file with prompt "Icons?"
tell application "FileMaker Pro"
set the cell "meinTestIcon" of database "zu testen" to (the icon
for myFile) as picture -- the as picture is the clue
end tell
the power of this users' list!
