Don't know how burdened the apple servers might get, but our solution
was to create a private, searchable archive for the last couple of years
of digests.
1. Put all the digests in a folder
2. Copy the folder to a R/W disk image
3. Index the "disk" with Sherlock
4. Convert the image file to a compressed read only smi file (about 12 MB
for a years digests with index).
Its not quite as nice as being able to search by Subject, Author etc., but
it is very fast, and does find what we are looking for.
