anyone know how to script sound managers channels?

I'm trying to run 2 apps at the same time ; Dictation software & Cu-SeeMe. They both use the microphone. The problem is even if I have applescript bring one or the other to the front with an *activate* call the background app doesn't release the sound resource.
After a little research I'm finding that sound manager has low level routines that can specify sound channels.

here's the call

myErr := SndNewChan (mySndChan, sampledSynth,
initStereo + initNoInterp,NIL);

I'm trying to figure out whether there's a way to manipulate sound manager and other parts of the PPC toolbox with AppleScript
