Have you by any chance neglected to tell us something? I find this same
limitation when I'm in Classic, booted from OS X, but no such problem when
booted from OS 9.1. More generally, if by any chance Smile is on a different
partition from your (OS 8/9) system folder, I'd suggest putting an alias to
the System folder on Smile's partition and an alias to your Applications
folder (or wherever Smile is) on your OS partition. Even more generally, I'd
suggest rebuilding your desktop.
