Here's some stuff I've posted to another discussion group on this topic.
I've been beating my head against the wall with this one since upgrading to
9.1 when it was released. I've found it simply too intermittent to
troubleshoot. Like you, I wanted to keep the 9.1 features, and have been
reluctant to downgrade. For me, it involves the keychain. The hang occurs at
the precise time the script would normally send the program linking password
from the client's keychain. Instead of recognizing an existing key, or
prompting me to enter a program linking password, the client machine stops
responding while the host seems unaffected. If I shut down or restart the
host, the client running the script gives me error -1216 or something like
that (not -916, but sounds like the same problem, from your description).
The script runs successfully about 90 per cent of the time after the
restart, but the whole purpose of the remote scripting is still thwarted. On
the occasions when restart doesn't allow the script to work again, I can
make it work by trashing the appleshare.pds file at the root level of the
hard drive of the host before a restart. That has allowed the script to work
again every time I've done it, I believe.
It's not necessary for me to access the keychain to cause the error, but
that's where I've spent most of my time troubleshooting it. The error seems
to be related to some condition on the host machine. You can most readily
demonstrate the condition by using Smile's "Tell" feature. Open a text
window in Smile and select "Tell" from the Edit menu. Select "IP" then type
in your host's IP address or domain name. When the condition exists, you'll
not be able to see anything when you click the "Get Applications" button,
and if you keep clicking the button, you'll experience the same freeze as
when running the script. If you get the app list to appear, then the
condition doesn't exist and your script will work. If not, you might as well
make a trip or call somebody to restart your host machine, because you've
lost any chance at remote control.
(response to suggestion about removing Keychain control panel from control
panels folder):
This had no effect for me. Maybe it's a different problem. When my client
machine freezes, I can do one of two things to recover from the freeze. I
can force quit the script, or I can restart the host. When I restart the
host while the client remains frozen, I get an error -1279 message (not 1216
as I previously reported) on the client. When I OK that message, the client
recovers from the freeze. If I force quit the script on the client without
restarting the host, the problem will recur. Lately, a restart of the host
allows the script to execute successfully once again on the client, until
whatever happens to cause the problem on the host happens again. Sometimes
the client still exhibits the problem and I must delete the appleshare.pds
file on the host (trash it, restart, empty trash) before the client script
will work again. So far I haven't been able to find anything that will
always cause the problem, so until I do, I'm just guessing.
