I agree. The problem is not with you or with AppleScript, the problem is with PageMaker. Making AppleScripts and PM Scripts interact gracefully and usefully is way advanced stuff. Unfortunately, PageMaker is another one of those aps that has it's own scripting language that by itself might be useful but is not well suited for inter-application scripting. You must use a 'do script' command which is tricky at best and it's a real pain to pass variables and/or objects from one to another. I'd say that's one reason PageMaker has lost market share to Quark. Again, from my own experience I know it cost them sales here.
The good news/bad news is that if you can break away from PageMaker both Quark and InDesign have pretty damn good AppleScript implementations and someone with your experience should be able to quickly master scripting either. (With a little help from this list)
