One way to do this is with the WaitTicks OSAX, allows you to specify a delay time in ticks (1/60 second units).
Go to http://osaxen.com and search for "waitticks" to download.

Hi all,

Is it possible in AppleScript to execute a command after a delay of a
certain time? For example, something like:

If "time-delay" 10 seconds
shut down

Many thanks,
