Oh, I do enjoy these cultural snapshots...
I've been a little disappointed that no one has asked about other secret
menu items. Either no one else here is from California, or they don't go
to In-n-Out, or they already know all about it.
For those outside California, a little explanation: In-n-Out started out
as a drive-through restaurant in 1948. The idea of a drive-*through* was
unique at the time -- mostly you had drive-*up* restaurants with
carhops. They're distinguished today by remaining privately owned and by
their food preparation: they don't freeze or pre-cook anything, and their
fries are sliced and cooked on-site. As burgers and fries go, they're
excellent.
