AppleScript is really cool, and it seems like it's not nearly as widely used

as it could be. Why do you think that is?
Apple has a history of coming up with cool technologies, then stifling them
with poor implementation and inadequate promotion: QuickDraw GX, OpenDoc,
Newton... if it were not for the heroic efforts of a few enthusiasic
insiders, AppleScript might have gone the same way.
But... even if AppleScript were better documented and better promoted, even
if the Script Editor was bulging with features and palettes full of handy
script-building shortcuts - it would still be something that you need to
roll your sleeves up and get your hands a bit dirty with, before you can
reap it's full benefits. And for many, that's a step too far.
It's like customising your car. With a little time and effort, an ordinary
set of wheels can be turned into a unique, high performance mean machine,
but most people don't have the time or the inclination. They just drive the
thing.
The rest of us can only rejoice that AppleScript continues to serve and
delight us, by letting us add all manner of go-faster stripes, chrome
wheels, 13 foot aerials and furry dice to our Mac experience.
