Does anyone here bother to read the online help?
People here may...the new users I run across don't. Eventually, someone at
a user group may point it (the Help) out to them. Or not. And may or may
not point out AppleScript. But user groups--on average--are dying.
And even if a new user finds the Help, what would induce them to search for
"AppleScript Help". It is prominent in the well-used 9.1 on my 7300...I
can't look right now at the more-nearly stock 9.2.1 on my G4 because I'm in
Mac OS X.
They have no idea AppleScript exists. [And, unless the help in Mac OS X
has changed with 10.1, they'll get no clue about AppleScript from the
initial help screen when Mac OS X becomes the default startup system (later
this year? early next year?) on new machines.]
I readily agree that the information is there...on most Macs I'm pretty
sure is remains unread.
On the side of the original Mac OS X box, AppleScript is listed under "Core
Technologies"...
Aqua
Darwin
Quartz
OpenGL 3D
QuickTime 5
Classic
Carbon and Cocoa
Java 2 Standard Edition (which claim is a bit of a stretch for 10.0)
Apple Type Services
AppleScript
ColorSync
Unicode
BSD networking
That's not exactly eye-catching placement for the casual user (or the geek
for that matter). And unfortunately it's fairly typical.
