Ken.
I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you, but there is a very
sophisticated 'matching technology' on the 'Windoze' platform called
'Windows Scripting Host'... based on VB Script... think of it as a reduced
flavor of Visual Basic.... However, you can also write WSH scripts in
JavaScript or Perl as well.
In terms of automating applications... I mainly tend to prefer Visual Basic
as a step up.. Mainly for the convenience of the IDE and the simplicity of
putting together a good user interface quickly.... Applications on the PC
side are not as 'Scriptable' as Mac apps in general... but enough of the big
ones are 'including Photoshop and numerous others'... You'll find that
performance of applications as an automation server is very impressive on
PC's.... For example... PhotoShop, automated with VB on a PC... is
generally a lot faster and more stable than a similar implementation on a G4
with PhotoScripter and AS..
If you use VB specifically as an automation tool, you'll also find that
thousands of controls - more or less an doing the function of OSAXen - that
provide functions such as FTP, Email, graphics and whatever are readily
available....(thousands, no joke)... And the OS features (user management,
file system... blah) are generally scriptable and well documented....
However, WSH is stashed away and rarely mentioned or publicized at all
(although it has shipped as standard with 'Windoze' for quite some time)
to the extent that many experienced programmers never get to learn about it.
I'm in the imaging business.. and I will always stand by my Mac... but you
know what? You gotta be ready to lock and load on any platform..
Just for the sake of conversation, I wonder what it was that the IT guys
totally failed produce over there !!?
Mohamed
The point Apple seems to miss entirely is THERE IS NO MATCHING TECHNOLOGY ON
THE WINDOZE PLATFORM. Lock and load, boys -- put Windoze in the crosshairs.
AppleScript can take em out.
