Man pages aren't terribly good teachers...they're excellent references when
you almost know how to do what your trying to do.

The default shell in Mac OS X is tcsh:

[localhost:~] john% echo $SHELL
/bin/tcsh

The obvious book is O'Reilly's "Using csh & tcsh" (I have first edition,
1995...I haven't looked to see whether there's a newer edition). The cover
features an oystercatcher (bird, not grumpy guy in yellow rain gear ;-)).
