Yes you can:

1) Command-click on the folder name in the title bar to see the enclosing
folders and/or navigate up to one.

2) Command-up arrow to open the parent folder.

These keyboard shortcuts have been in place since at least System 7.1. It's a
real pity these (and many, many more) Finder shortcuts aren't better known.
Perhaps it's my familiarity with (and frequent use of) these shortcuts which
explains my slow adoption of OSX.
