Sorry folks.
Panicked a bit there. The prospect of having to reinstall everything from
scratch was looming horrifically... but after an hour or so of mucking about
(blindly) with my sound card driver's settings and the position of its
helper app in the list of login items, the beep was suddenly restored. Phew.
Sorry again for the superfluous 'drowning man' style arm-waving. When things
go wrong in OS X I still come over all wet behind the ears.
