Are you _sure_ you've tried 'read file pathname' ? 'read pathname' happens to work for me in 8.6 but probably only because I've got Jon's Commands installed and it's doing the coercion for me -- I'd never consider using 'read pathname' even so.

The dictionary says "anything" but a string is not included in the three definitions of "anything".
