Cloning Users

In OS X we've created a disk image for installation on new Macs. We're hoping to clone the image and then set each one up for local log in by individual users. The problem is that every time we create a new user all the preferences, serial numbers and everything else in the image gets set to the default. This makes our disk images a lot less useful than they should be.

So, is there a way to clone a user in OS X using AppleScript? How about simply renaming a user?
