Think before you autorespond

  • Subject: Think before you autorespond

It's that time of year again when folks go away for long periods of time and don't want to come back to a mailbox of thousands of messages to plow through in the wintry days of early January. It's also the time when beleaguered list managers have to deal with folks who set up autoresponders without unsubscribing from their lists.

Do you want to announce to several thousand people that you're out of the office for two weeks? Do you want to set up a mail loop where our computer and your computer exchange 200 messages a day until you return? Do you want your list subscription mysteriously deactivated, so that when you come back in January your daily mail load is a lot lighter and you really can't remember why?

To avoid the above pitfalls and remain in the good graces of the list admin and your fellow list members, please remember to go to http://www.lists.apple.com/mailman/subscribe/applescript-users (or -implementors or -studio), log in with your email address and your list password, and check the "Disable Mail Delivery" box before you turn on your autoresponder for the season. Do this for every list subscription, even if you subscribe to the digest. It'll make the holidays happier for all of us.

Regards,

Chris Espinosa
