I have Word 5.1 on my "other machine" ... a PPC 7500, and I can open RTF
from Word 2001, from AppleWorks 6, from ClarisWorks 4 and from win machines.
Your Word 5.1 is plenty sufficient to open, save (and even translate) RTF.
One more thing...
If you are trying to write an AppleScript to make MacLink turn an RTF into a
Word RTF, then how will that help a PC user...since you said:

The instructions previously posted will work in Word, in addition to the
additional method available that wasn't mentioned, which is just to drag and
drop.
