Thank you, John. The 'rtf' connection also came up in an off-list reply. The
writer ran 'get clipboard info' after setting the clipboard to some text
from a TextEdit document with AS [no styles displayed], and after copying it
'manually' in the Edit menu [styles displayed]. In the second case, the
clipboard info showed an extra item: {<<class RTF >>, 275}.

It's somewhere to start digging, at least.
