okay, now i understand the problem (pardon me for jumping in
late and not catching up on the thread). it seems you could
do this on X by accessing the hdiutil through the shell,
creating some images, copying the appropriate batches
of files, and burning. all from AppleScript control.

if you're looking for the algorithm, no i don't have it at
hand.
