This is not what I need. I have gigabytes worth of video that needs to
be archived to CD, and viewable and usable once it gets there. I do not
want to have to go to the trouble of breaking up these huge folders (and
subfolders, of course) into smaller 650 MB folders myself;

Had you written that initially, I think that everybody would get what you want.
I finally did.
Could you tell me how much space you want to burn per CD ?
That is, is 650 the size we are aiming to? Also, could you check what is the smaller size o a file burned to a CD?

I want the
computer to do it for me. This doesn't seem too difficult to me, and in
fact, as I said, DOS could do something similar to this with the Move
command. This seems like a problem that lends itself quite well to
AppleScript, but apparently no one has ever solved this problem on the
Mac by any means. Am I the only one who has ever wanted to do this?

it is simple ( or at least not difficult) you are the first one to bring it up (at least to best my recollection).
I liked the problem and I'll do it. However, since i do not your files, could you tell me what is the minimum, maximum and average size. Ball park figures, of course.
