Comments Sought - Browser as launcher revisited...

Greetings...

For a few years now, I've been trying to work out a plausible, reliable
way to make a web browser open local (on-disk) files. I think I'm
finally getting close.

'Missing Link' is in pre-beta form. It is made entirely of vanilla
AppleScript. I believe it can be ported to OS X, but I'm not certain as
yet.

A brief description...

Missing Link is a helper protocol that enables a web browser to be used
as a local file launcher. Files, folders, applications, script
applications and certain other file types can be opened, launched or run
from links on an HTML page - just as if they had been double-clicked in
the Finder.

Filename suffixes or extensions are not required. Original files are not
modified in any way.

To the best of my knowledge, Missing Link can _not_ be implemented on the
Internet except by proper Mac program linking methods... which means
security issues should be minimal.

At present, Missing Link works only on pre-OS X Mac platforms - 7.5.x
through 9.2.x. It works with most browsers, including Netscape (to v.6),
Internet Explorer, Opera and iCab.

A more complete description of Missing Link can be found at:

http://www.mhtc.net/~bunnz/scriptlink.html

... however, the features described and offered are in a state of flux...
and the demo download is not available at this point.

I would be _very_ interested to hear comments and discussion about the
utility (if any) of the concept. I have plenty of ideas about it myself,
but would much like to hear from others. I'm not quite ready for it yet,
but I would welcome beta testers if anyone can find the time.

I don't have the ability to put a decent 'front end' on Missing Link. As
such, it will likely be offered much as described in shareware form... if
it 'makes the cut' at all.

Thanks for your time and for this forum. I've learned _a lot_ here...
both from individual list members and from 'lurking'.

Happy 4th !!!

Peter Bunn
