Hi,
Forgive my ignorance, but I am hoping to get some pointers on how
exactly I go about adding scripting additions to OS X, as well as
installing an application like Smile 2.4.2 (which has no install
program). If you could contact me off-list, it would be appreciated.

Hey Lyle;
Just drag the Smile2.4.2 folder into your applications folder.
With the scripting additions, drag then into
/System/Library/ScriptionAdditions/
If you want to use terminal ...
cp /Volumes/Satimage241_Install/Satimage2.4.1/Satimage.osax
/System/Library/ScriptingAdditions
