If you're an absolute beginner, "Applescript for Idiots" is great
although
packed with weak gags. "Applescript in a Nutshell" is also pretty good

maybe harder going for an absolute beginner.
Another good option for "AppleScript in a Nutshell", which I find to be
a good reference, is to subscribe to Safari Books online at
http://safari.oreilly.com. For as little as $10/month, you get full
access to books on the Internet from a wide variety of publishers.
O'Reilly offers many of their books there, including a number of good
Mac OS X books. I've been using it for a few months now. Every moth
you can swap out books you are subscribing to for different books.
