Snax lets you set, see, and even sort by Finder Labels..
Retrospect can still use Finder Labels in its rules
Labels [...] are due to be phased out like types and creators are,
as OS X moves toward UFS file systems instead of HFS. [...] Apple
has commanded that we stop using HFS metadata so that we'll work
with other file systems.
i think you might have overstated that just a bit.. Apple
has mandated filename extensions, but not deprecated HFS
metadata:
<
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/ReleaseNotes/FileExtensionGuidelines.html>
"Applications may set an HFS creator for documents they
create if they wish."
there's a good discussion of metadata issues here:
<
http://www.arstechnica.com/reviews/01q4/macosx-10.1/macosx-10.1-11.html>
and if anything, there are hints Apple may be headed toward
a filesystem with *more* metadata options, certainly not
dropping HFS+ in favor of UFS:
