Class action: a clever system whereby the lawyers make multi-million
dollar fees (and "expenses") and the members of the class get a pittance.
In this case, probably something like a $15 coupon good at Apple retail
stores or the Apple online store for buying things at list that you could
get, net, cheaper elsewhere.
The game is played roughly like this: suit is filed and certified as a
class action. Victim company computes how much a successful defense would
cost, maybe adds a little bit, subtracts what arranging the settlement will
cost and offers a settlement. Class accepts the settlement after the
lawyers are happy with the court's award of their fees.
Only if there is actually a strong case do the class members do better than
the above (but in that situation, so do the lawyers). There isn't a strong
case here.
