Hi All:
I no longer seem to be able to position my desktop icons
scriptomatically in OS X. The Finder dictionary says the item
position can only be set when in a window (meaning the desktop does
not qualify?).
Can it be that this extremely useful pre-X feature is not even
possible in OS X? If not, what are people doing as a workaround? I
like to position icons precisely, and rather closely together
(sometimes to make a "picture"), which goes kerflooey on restart.
An even more useful post-X feature is that you have a folder (window)
at ~/Desktop which you can open with a click of an icon in the dock.
You can set this window up as you like with whatever background you
like and you don't have to clear a dozen windows out of the way
before you can see the contents as you do if you use the old style
desktop. You can also choose whether the volumes appear in the
window or not. The icons can be positioned as you choose and sized
as you choose and you can even use a picture for a pretty background.
I never use the "proper" desktop.
