Position desktop icons in OS X?

  • Subject: Position desktop icons in OS X?

Hi All:

I no longer seem to be able to position my desktop icons scriptomatically in OS X. The Finder dictionary says the item position can only be set when in a window (meaning the desktop does not qualify?).

Can it be that this extremely useful pre-X feature is not even possible in OS X? If not, what are people doing as a workaround? I like to position icons precisely, and rather closely together (sometimes to make a "picture"), which goes kerflooey on restart.

Thanks,

guy
