It's a rather sorry thing in X. I'm not even sure what it's there for,
except to serve as a pretty background against which to display
soft-shadowed folders.
I do miss the pre OS X desktop's ability to display items from multiple
volumes side by side, but I suspect that many found this confusing and
anti-intuitive. (One benefit was that floppies and zips could have their own
desktop items which appeared as if by magic when the disk mounted, obviating
the need to actually 'open' the disk.)
The reduction in scope and configurability of the desktop is more than
compensated for (IMHO) by the new 'browser' idiom for Finder windows, which
makes navigation a joy.
For those who made the desktop the hub of their Mac experience (or the
primary expression of their individuality) the best advice when moving to OS
X might be to find a new way of working.
