Not been following this thread, but going back to the original question
that started it all... did anyone look at vanilla AS sorts as another
potential solution to sorting filenames? Might avoid concerns over
character sets, at least for finding a solution there.

So what strategy do we need to adopt? Seems a pretty important question to

Extremely important. Also (IMHO), it's something Apple and the AS team need
to answer (and ASAP), as we can't answer it ourselves.
Users need to know where they stand now, and they need to see a roadmap of
where it's going. Users also need informed advice on how to write code that
will be robust and flexible to withstand all this upheaval. It's going to
be a lengthy transition, so the sooner we know how to tackle it, the less
painful the whole experience will be.
I know Apple's got this thing about total and absolute secrecy over works
in progress; however, keeping schtum on an important, fundamental issue
like this will only hurt its customers. I believe it's in their own best
interest they open up on this one; I just hope they see this too.
