If you are using apps which have Services enabled, s copy of selected text will be placed into a new document. For instance, selected Mail.app message text will be placed in a TextEdit document with formatting maintained. BBedit can also be utilized.

After reading through a digest or individual e-mail messages, this may give you a document that is more easily manipulated. As AS, System Events and OS X evolve, I wonder if there isn't a plan for all this. I don't have enough knowledge yet of the NS background and Cocoa, so this makes me want to explore further.
