One the question of the Services menu, none of my carbon apps give

something I added disabled it, but I've forgotten what this might

Same here!
I've spent all evening dealing with the problems I caused in
succeeding to get the Services Menu back. In the end I went into
9.2.2 for about the tenth time and simply renamed my Preferences
folder so that on reboot in 10.1.4 I had no prefs at all. Now
everything's working fine. I can restore what old prefs I really
need as the need arises.
One good thing is that Safari keeps its prefs out of the way, so I
still have all my bookmarks etc.

Well, I've been trying everything else here, no success.
But, and a big but here, this was not caused by my tempering with
info.plist.
Further investigation showed me that the problem is somewhere else. My
other machine, which was not touched, also presents the same problem.
Both accounts have the same name and both are admin...
Using the services menu in another account presents no problem.
I'll investigate this further, because now I do have some time and I am
extremely stubborn, although I know As can beat me anytime!!!
I' ll look until I find the solution, or I'll just follow your recipe!
