I thought that the Classic environment depended upon OS 9.x and
wouldn't work with an earlier operating system. I would guess that if
OS 8.x had a chance to work under the Classic environment it would
still need the Carbon libraries in order to do so. I don't know what
legacy apps would be holding you so far back but I'd say there is a
fairly good chance that there are replacements for them, considering
not only stuff made directly for Mac OS X but also for Mac OS 9,
Windows (through Virtual PC), and via package managers such as Fink.
However if you really want to test out Mac OS 8.6 under the Classic
environment the way I'd go about it is to do a normal install of Mac OS
X with the latest Mac OS 9 as the Classic environment. I would then
take an old install of Mac OS 8.6 which has the very latest updates,
including any Carbon libraries that will work on it, and replace the
Mac OS 9 System Folder with the Mac OS 8.6 System Folder. Reboot and
see if you can run a Classic application within Mac OS X. Either Mac
OS X will look the other way and will successfully launch Mac OS 8.6
in Classic environment or it will fail to do so.
Good luck!

A quick question for those who are familiar with OS X.
I have not upgraded my OS from 8.6 as I run some legacy apps that
break in 9.
I was told by someone that I could run both OS X and OS 8.6 on my G3
Bronze Powerbook. I have been eyeing various gadgets (MP3 players &
stuff) that are supported in OS X but not classic.
Is this true and could you direct me as how to do this.
