For anyone who9s never changed a default setting or added an interface tweak
or bought a peripheral that requires a 3rd party driver, I9m sure the
migration from 10.2.x to 10.3 was a cinch.
My experience, however, was a little different. I jumped in, full of
shiny-faced trust and hope, using the installer9s option to 'upgrade my
existing system'. The result was a mess. The mac help files were still
telling me what was new with 10.2, and the whole installation was a botched
hybrid of Jaguar and Panther. Firewall settings were inaccessible; my
printer didn't work any more, and many of the little enhancements I treasure
(eg, PTH Clock, SystemSound Extension) started behaving badly, differently,
or not at all. Network connections stopped working, and strange messages
started appearing at logout. A nightmare, in other words.
Two days later, I had scuttled back to Jaguar. (Thank-you, Carbon Copy
Cloner.)
I put a clean install of 10.3 on a separate partition so that I could get to
grips with its maturity9 when I wasn9t doing any actual work. Since then,
an Apple update has gone some way to tackling the notorious Firewire issue,
and workarounds or solutions for the many breakages caused by redesigned OS
features that I couldn9t simply avoid using have started to appear in forums
such as MacFixIt, etc. When HP updated their Photosmart print drivers to
work with Panther (about a week ago), I was finally able to migrate to 10.3
full-time. But the decision wasn9t made lightly, nor without a great deal of
preparatory ground-work.
And frankly, I9m dreading what will happen when I try to upgrade the family
Mac downstairs to the new OS. That9s four more accounts that9ll need
nannying back to health after Panther9s through mauling them. Shudder.
When it9s working as it should, 10.3.x certainly isn9t going to disappoint
Jaguar veterans, but the new Finder and re-designed GUI make this the most
psychologically daunting upgrade since 9>X. I9m happy I made the switch, now
that the frequency of nasty surprises has tailed off somewhat, but would
advise anyone approaching the Panther to tread carefully and go gently.
