Hello,
I had to give the announcement in a hurry, I could not introduce properly Smile 2.5.9 to you, I'll do it now.
In short:
You're more helped to use Smile.
- a concise PDF guide now presents in few pages (10p) what's needed to get started right with Smile,
- two specialized PDF guides present two main features of Smile: the graphic library and the GUI editor.
You're more helped when scripting.
- 'Find definition' now searches also the libraries documentations,
- new 'Find handler in open windows' contextual menu item in text windows, saves much time.
It's more natural to use libraries.
- new hidden "add library an_alias" command [1], dynamically loads a library (complements the standard load-on-launch mechanism),
- new mechanism to document a library,
You can use more Smile tools.
The 'Scripts' menu was re-organized - it's clearer now - and it proposes additional tools: Revert File, Set type and creator, EZOpener (a web browser-like file input field), HexaDeciText, Zap LF's (turns UNIX' and Windows' ends of lines into CR's). Also, "Synchronize folders" (a separate download) makes it a child's game to maintain properly all your backups.
You can use a powerful graphic environment.
The graphic library (Quartz pdf engine in AppleScript) was already mature in 2.5.6. New graphical objects and a few additional graphic commands now allow for handling in a more versatile fashion the graphics that you produce by script.
If you do use the graphic library of Smile for making illustrations, you may also want to consider SmileLab.
SmileLab 1.2.2 is the mature version of SmileLab, the fully scriptable IDE for interactive visualization of numerical data. I invite you to download SmileLab and some sample scripts, and to test it. You can test it for free and even if you are not a scientist you may find it a new and beautiful experience.
Note that you can use for free all the mathematical features of SmileLab (transcendental functions, operations on arrays, Fourier transform etc.) - actually most of them are included in the osax' which ship with SmileLab.
More amazing yet, you can also use for free SmileLab's '1d' plotter (curves, scatter plots, histograms etc)! SmileLab might be the best, yet the only free, scriptable 1d plotter.
