My take is that the best thing about it is that it uses *hooks* that are
built in -- that's what should make it more reliable and near ubiquitous in
its coverage.

I would actually have preferred the hooks built in but still the requirement
for a third-party element like Player, to (a) stop developers saying why
bother with real scriptability, and (b) make sure it wasn't a newcomer's
first port of call.

But that's all academic at this point.
