In a recent exchange, David Crowe wrote:
Thanks for the tip, I don't know why this is part of Explorer, but not
accessible from the OS.

Because for some reason, Apple left it out of the System Preferences.
Microsoft kept it in IE's prefs as a holdover from the pre OS-X versions.

I'm not completely sure this is relevant, but...
With the assistance of two other list members, I discovered that Explorer
does _not_ always delete/overwrite previous helper entries properly.
Julifos alerted me to the fact that there are two related entries for
each helper in the .plist. Explorer only deletes one of these... and
leaves the second intact... which seems to play a bit of havoc when you
try to make a change. Rob Jorgensen sent me a link for a third party
preference pane 'More Internet' which does a better job. It's available
here:

Alternatively, you might try stuffing and trashing the
'com.apple.internetconfig.plist' and starting over with a freshly
generated one.
I've put in an informal 'feature request' to have the Internet preference
pane expanded to include pre-X features that are now missing in action.
Perhaps if enough others do likewise...
