As far as I can tell, the role of AppleScript in Mac OS X is growing in
importance. There are significant aspects of the core operating system that
actually require AppleScript to work correctly, and an ever-growing array of
system features support AppleScript, so rumors of its death are certainly
exaggerated. I can't remember what from WWDC 2003 is public and what is
under NDA, so I won't talk about Panther. But I will say that I'm far from
disappointed.
It is certainly true that many of Apple's applications have poor AppleScript
support or none at all. That isn't from lack of effort or will on the part
of the AppleScript crew. There's only so much they can do within a very big
organization, however. I believe Apple's application development is
organized into teams, and it's hard to know from the outside how each team
sets its priorities -- especially when it comes to the pressure of release
dates and budget restraints, and competition for resources within the
company. There are examples of good AppleScript support, and examples where
much more work is needed. I don't see any reason to be pessimistic over the
long haul, but only a need to be patient and in the meantime make the most
of what we've got.
