Thanks all.

I went with looking at the version of the Finder. That should be fine for
my application. I'm sure 99% of my clients have standard systems installed.

The project is a 8/9/X/PC hybrid CD and I wanted the user to be able to
launch the program with a single app. Since Director (the authoring tool)
builds separate executables for Classic and X, I needed a launcher app that
would detect the system and open the right one.

I authored and compiled it in whatever the AS version is that comes with
9.2.2 and it ran great on 8.6 and 10.2.6.

What a great tool for a quick solution!
