1. If the error occurs within a "tell" block, then that's the "told" application which is guilty, you can only quit and relaunch it.
2. Otherwise, maybe you could try AS 1.8.3. I don't know whether there is a NL installer. If there is none, ask for the pieces here (extension + standard additions).
