Mail.app selection of front window

(Sorry if this shows up twice: I seem to be having some email problems)

I have an applescript that opens MS Windows paths for me. I have been trying to write something so that I can get the user selected text of the front message window into a variable I can pass to this script. This way when colleges send me an email with the path to a document in it, I can just highlight it run the script to go there.

Can any one offer an example of how to get a selection in Mail.app into a variable?
TIA
