I would like to address a built in port (usb or serial) in my mac via

Is such thing at all doable?
Yes. I looked at all this some time ago and have subsequently forgotten
most of what I found out. However, I was chatting to my mobile phone
via telnet and a USB IR receiver - so at the very least, if you have a
scriptable telnet app, you can achieve your goal.
FWIW, now I have a mobile phone dumping SMS text messages into
FileMaker Pro. This uses Troi's serial PI for FileMaker Pro

If your answer is YES,
where can i find info about that to get started!
You may want to look at some of Apple's documentation on this. A quick
search on developer.apple.com found
<
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/DeviceDrivers/Conceptual/
USBBook/USBDeviceInterfaces/chapter_1_section_1.html> which, IIRC, was
the kicking off point for my understanding of all this.
