I would like to address a built in port (usb or serial) in my mac via applescript.

Is such thing at all doable?
Smile (the free editor for AppleScript) implements serial I/O in its dictionary. Here is how it works:
1. you purchase one of the Keyspan USB/Serial adapters
2. you install their driver (IIRC)
3. you do serial I/O by script, using Smile's "RS232" object class.
