Selection-Getting

All,

In OS X, is there any way to grab the currently selected text in
an application, such as Terminal, for reuse elsewhere? Barring
that, is it possible to store the clipboard, force a copy of the
selected text to the clipboard, do some stuff, and then replace
the stored text in the clipboard? I have exhausted all my
resources^W^W^W^WGoogled endlessly trying to find a working
incantation, with no luck. Hence, I now appeal to you, scripting
wizards, for guidance on this perplexing issue.

Brent
