Unless someone can help me figure out why I can't keep a folder action
going, my next step is either a crash course in shell scripting or a
script to start Distiller every so often, and kill distiller when the
in-folder is empty.
Why not use a stay-open script with an idle handler to watch the folder?
One disadvantage that comes to mind with a stay-open script is that
if files/folders remain in the watched folder after script
execution, a tracking mechanism will be required in order to avoid
repeated processing.
So, um, have a pre-process folder...
But this still means that a script must be running continuously for
each watched folder unless one writes their own app/script to emulate
folder actions. I hope that the Apple dev team is hard at work making
folder actions more reliable. If so, maybe they'll even throw a bone
to all of the Jaguar users who can't upgrade to Panther. ;-)
