Starting a process when Mail starts - possible?

Basically I'd like to find an AppleScript solution to bootstrap a
process when Mail starts. This script will need to "do shell script"
inside, and the process running in background will quit when Mail
quits.

I know it's possible to do this using a Mail bundle, but that'll be the
last resort if AS can't fit the bill.

Any ideas? Thank you.
