So I'm curious: was Esc. always a synonym for Cmd-.?

Escape been a synonym for Command-period ever since Command-period was implemented as cancel, so far as I can recall. I think that they were introduced with System 6, but it may be earlier than that. Regardless, the origins are buried in ancient history (of the Mac, that is).
