Ever tried using Smile? (Not bundled yet, I must admit).
I recall that in Smile, 1. you can change style by script, 2. you can store styled text with "set x to text of window 1 as styled text".
You should tell us what you want to do with this style data afterwards.

Sounds little realistic. It's the job of apps to gather the info from the data fork and the info from wherever that contains the style ("styl" resource, e.g.).
