Obviously it can, as this list server (and likewise our own CommunigatePro
server) do nothing more than check the "From:" addresses of list
subscribers.
You could obviously force the server to resolve the "From:" address to the
originating IP but that would cause all sorts of problems for people that
like to send stuff to the list from both work and home etc.
We'll always be able to spot and report an overtly malicious post from the
originating IP, but the odd thing that slips through (like the one from
Amazon) proves that it can cause confusion to even the most experienced list
members.
The most annoying abuse would be one-off SPAM messages. All of our email
addresses are published in the archives and could easily be used to target
the list with nuisance messages.
I've always favoured some sort of encrypted key solution so that lists and
mail servers require an email address *and* a key from "trusted"
correspondents.
It's the kind of solution that requires no investment or new technology -
which is obviously why nobody's interested in pursuing it :-(
