That said, I can't recall 'archiving/compression zip-like' capabilities in
the Finder.

Well, via the UI it's like StuffIt's old "archive-via-rename" method.

I don't know what the scripting equivalent would be, but it would be logical to attempt setting the filename to something ending with ".zip" and see if it works.

who wrote a mail filter in Perl to avoid procmail's dumb, cryptic :0 codes
and have 'if senders is intersected by whitelist(mailinglists) then done'
instead. Gotta love regular expressions. :)
